Scroll and Search | animation

Scroll and Search is from a series of short stop animations made during lockdown, when it became less easy to work with human performers. The animations are something in between my paper scores and live performances, and I found this a useful format for contemplating the relationship between both -the dialogue between the still image and motion, the fixed score and the interpretation, the planned script and the thing that feels right in the live moment. A stop animation is quiet and still at the same time as it is fast and frantic. I was working with natural light so time became a big factor, working against it, to make sure there was no major pause in the process that would disclose a significant shift in light at the end. I’m fascinated by this format that demands a presence of mind like in live performance, while also allowing for so much post-production.
